What is Acai???

So if you don’t know how to say Acai, don’t worry you aren’t alone! In this blog you are going to not only learn how to say it but also know exactly what it is and why it is so good for you!

First and foremost, let’s learn how to say this word! Acai is pronounced ah-sigh-ee.

Now that we know how to say it we can move on to what it actually is! Acai is a berry that grows in the Amazon. The berry itself is technically a stone fruit, so it might look like a blueberry at first glance but there is a pit in there. You might be asking yourself, if there is a pit on the inside of such a small berry what am I actually consuming? The answer to this question is you are only consuming the skin on the outside of this berry. Acai is picked from the Amazon and only last ONE day before going bad! This means that if you are anywhere else but the Amazon the only way you can get acai is in powder form or a frozen puree.

Acai is considered a superfood (a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being) for a couple of different reasons. First reason being it is super high in antioxidants (more than any other berry) and healthy omegas. Another reason this berry is so awesome is that it has no naturally occurring sugars! This berry also hits all of those key words you probably here everywhere, Certified Fair Trade, Organic, Vegan, Kosher, Gluten Free, Lactose Free. Acai will pretty much work on any diet that you are on!

You now know how to say it and why it is so good, but as for the taste you might still be questioning this powerful berry! Acai tastes like exotic mixed berries with a hint of cocoa. You can mix this acai into smoothies or bowls. My personal favorite is an acai bowl which is a combination of acai, berries (or another fruit), banana and sometimes other added ingredients. It is blended made to order and then topped with granola and sliced banana – there are also a variety of other toppings such as fresh fruit, cocoa nibs, peanut butter (because that’s good on everything!), sliced almonds or coconut! 

Acai bowls tastes like you are cheating on your diet but they are actually good for you!
